Rome is the capital of Italy and is located in the central-western part of the Italian Peninsula, in the region of Lazio. The city is located in both banks of the Tiber River and about 20 km from the Tyrrhenian Sea. Rome covers an area of 1,285.31 km2 (496.3 sq. mi) and is the largest in Italy.

Rome is the city with the highest number of neighboring municipalities: 29 Italian municipalities and the Vatican City that is an independent and sovereign state that hosts the Holy See Pope, a total of 30 territories.

The city is divided into 20 administrative areas, called municipi or municipalities that are: Roma I (Centro Storico), Roma II (Parioli), Roma III (Nomentano - San Lorenzo), Roma IV (Monte Sacro), Roma V (Tiburtina), Roma VI (Prenestino), Roma VII (Centocelle), Roma VIII (delle Torri), Roma IX (San Giovanni), Roma X (Cinecittą), Roma XI (Appia Antica), Roma XII (EUR), Roma XIII (Ostia), Roma XV (Arvalia Portuense), Roma XVI (Monte Verde), Roma XVII (Prati), Roma XVIII (Aurelia), Roma XIX (Monte Mario) and Roma XX (Cassia Flaminia).
